West Coast Carousels |
There are 19 classic wood carousels remaining in operation along the West Coast of the United States between San Diego, California in the south and Seattle, Washington in the north. These machines were built during the "Golden Age of Carousels," the fifty years between 1880 and 1930. There are 14 carousels still operating in California, two in Oregon, and three in Washington. The oldest installation is in San Diego, a 1895 carousel built by Charles I. D. Looff. The newest machine is also in California in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, a 1926 carousel manufactured by the Spillman Engineering Company. |
